About

Originally from northern Virginia in the USA, Matthew Shawkey earned a BA in Neuroscience from Wesleyan University, an MSc in Zoology from University of South Florida, and a PhD from Auburn University. After a post-doc at U. California- Berkeley, he was an assistant and then associate professor at U. Akron from 2008-2016. In January 2016 he moved to Ghent University in Belgium as an associate professor (hoofddocent).

A native of Mexico, Liliana D’Alba completed a bachelor's degree in Biology from Mexico State Autonomous University (UAEM). Then she traveled to Scotland where she obtained a Master and PhD degrees at the University of Glasgow, UK in Ecology and Environmental Biology (M.Res) and Evolutionary Biology (PhD). She did a postdoc at the University of Akron in Ohio, USA and more recently a senior postdoc at the Ghent University in Belgium. She is now a Research Scientist at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, The Netherlands.
